Members of Engine 733 quickly doused the blaze at the corner of Hollywood Avenue and Dogwood Lane, but the internationally-lauded sports car -- which can cost upwards of $225,000 or more -- was a total loss.
Cars catch fire for a variety of reasons, including manufacturing defects, poor maintenance and the addition of after-market parts to soup up the exhaust system.
Experts note that a number of incidents have been reported when unburnt fuel entered the exhaust line and ignited on a Lamborghini that was revved high while stationary or driven at a low speed.
The driver got out after the car caught fire in Ho-Ho-Kus just after 6 p.m. Saturday.
